Tom Murphy (1953–2023), known affectionately as "Top Cat", was one of Ireland's most distinctive outsider artists. Working outside the traditional art world, he developed an expressive visual language characterised by bold colour, intuitive mark-making and deeply personal subject matter.
Despite enduring periods of homelessness and struggles with mental health, Murphy remained devoted to painting throughout his life. His work drew inspiration from memory, spirituality and the flowers tended by his mother during his childhood in Dublin. Rich in emotion and individuality, his paintings have become increasingly sought after and are now recognised as an important part of Ireland's outsider art tradition.
This original work is a striking exampl
e of Murphy's expressive portraiture, where fluid line, vivid colour and instinctive composition combine to create a piece full of character and presence.
